What to Do While Your SAM.gov Registration Processes

Submitting your SAM.gov registration is not the finish line. It can take up to 10 business days to go active, and there is real, useful work you can do while you wait instead of just checking your inbox.

What's happening behind the scenes

   Your entity is validated

   SAM.gov checks that your legal business name and physical address match your formation documents exactly. If it can't confirm them automatically, a person reviews them by hand, and this manual review averages about 4 business days (longer when SAM.gov is busy). Being asked for a document is normal; it does not mean you did anything wrong.

   Your taxpayer information is validated

   Separately, your EIN and taxpayer name are checked against IRS records. This typically takes 3-5 business days. If you got your EIN very recently, see the note below before you assume something is wrong.

   You're assigned a CAGE code

   A Department of Defense system (the Defense Logistics Agency) automatically assigns you a 5-character CAGE code. You'll see it in your SAM.gov emails; there's nothing for you to do with it.

4. 4

   Your registration goes active

   This can take up to 10 business days from submission. SAM.gov emails you when you're active (check spam, since it can land there). If it's been more than 14 business days, contact the Federal Service Desk at fsd.gov →

How long does SAM.gov registration actually take?

There's no single number, because it depends on whether SAM.gov can confirm your details automatically. In practice: allow up to 10 business days for your full registration to go active, and expect the taxpayer check alone to take 3-5 business days. If SAM.gov needs documents to confirm your business, that manual review adds about 4 more business days on average. Past 14 business days with no update, contact the Federal Service Desk at fsd.gov.
